Researchers have found that a compound found in green tea appears to reduce the severity of, and even prevent, rheumatoid arthritis. The compound, polyphenols, are considered to be antioxidants which occur in certain foods, like green tea.
In three different studies mice were injected with collagen which produces a condition which is similar to RA in people. One group of mice was given green tea polyphenols, known as EGCG. The results in this group were that 44% developed arthritis. Another group was not given the EGCG and 94% developed arthritis. It was also found that a less severe form of arthritis developed in the group who were treated with the antioxidant.
There has been considerable research into the beneficial affects of antioxidants but this is the first study that links green tea to impacts on arthritis. Seeing as how there is no cure for RA it may be wise to add green tea to your menu.
