World Tai Chi & Qigong Day

Tomorrow is World Tai Chi and Qigong Day. Tai chi is an exercise form with slow, continuous movements that has been practiced in China for centuries for its health benefits. World Tai Chi and Qigong Day is an annual event held the last Saturday of April since 1999 to promote the related disciplines of Tai Hhi Ch’uan and Qigong.

People in over 65 nations will participate in thousands of events in hundreds of cities worldwide.

I posted in January about research into improvements in knee osteoarthritis with Tai Chi.

The primary mission of the World Tai Chi & Quigong Day organization is to educate people about emerging medical research on Tai Chi and Chi Kung, explaining the nuances of Tai Chi & Chi Kung in plain language, and connecting people with local teachers.

The Arthritis Foundation says that Tai Chi has significant benefits to people with arthritis. In particular, the Arthritis Foundation’s on Tai Chi program, utilizing the Sun style of Tai Chi, includes agile steps and exercises that may improve mobility, breathing and relaxation. The movements don’t require deep bending or squatting, which makes it easier and more comfortable to learn.

“Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation is a joint-safe program developed from the ancient Chinese discipline of tai chi,” Boehme said. “It is practiced all over the world as an exercise for better health. International scientific studies have proven Tai Chi’s effectiveness in managing chronic arthritis pain and reducing fall risk.”

Many also practice Tai Chi for the health benefits of stress relief, improved concentration, and integration of mind and body.
