Earlier this year British researchers raised a concern that anti-TNF drugs, as a result of their action in depressing the immune system, may increase the overall risk of cancer. Spanish researchers who are presenting their research at the American College of Rheumatology’s annual meeting in San Francisco say their studies do not support that conclusion. [...] Researchers are not sure of the exact causes of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but they have discovered that cytokines (bioactive proteins), in particular TNF-alpha and IL-6 are significant contributors. These cytokines cause inflammation which leads to destruction of the joints and tissues. The action of another cytokine, placenta growth factor (PIGF), is suspected to be critical for the [...] Researchers from the University of British Columbia and the Arthritis Center of Canada are reporting that analysis of patient data shows that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients have a 50% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease (CVD) than the general population. [...] In April of 2007, NICE recommended that if a rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patient did not respond to 1 of 3 approved anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) drugs they could not try one of the others. But after months of campaigning by 2,000 members of the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society, drug companies and patients groups, NICE has agreed to reconsider its previous recommendation. [...] Psoriasis is a genetic disease with at least eight chromosomes so far that researchers have identified as being connected to the genetic transmission of the disease.
