Stem Cell Treatment for Arthritis

There was an interesting press release about a doctor that is providing stem cell treatment for a number of conditions including rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

This new treatment, called SCP-Stem Cell Panakea, is being offered by Dr. Omar Gonzales of Livonia, Michigan. According to Dr. Gonzales’ website this new form of regenerative treatment can be used to treat multiple sclerosis, ALS, Alzheimer’s, liver disorders, epilepsy, kidney failure, diabetes, Parkinson’s, nervous system disorders, blood disorders, as well as RA.

Dr. Gonzales uses amniotic epithelial stem cells from the amniotic membrane. This is a translucid sheet that covers the placenta which he harvests and uses to recreate and rebuild cells of practically any organ.

Since both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis involve destruction of the cartilage, Dr. Gonzales claims that his SCP therapy has the potential to help treat those diseases by regenerating some of the lost tissue.

The stem cell implants are placed in surgical openings created in the lower part of the abdomen. Two small pockets, measuring 1 to 1.5 cm., are made in which amniotic membrane of about 50 grams each are inserted. The incisions are closed with 2 stitches and covered with a Band-Aid. The entire procedure takes 30 minutes. Antibiotics are used for 5 days and pain killers are prescribed, if necessary.

The tissue used for the implants is obtained from a recent caesarian delivery following consent of the mother. The donor is evaluated according a list of serology tests which include HIV and hepatitis.
