Researchers have provided yet another good reason to drink red wine: it helps prevent inflammation such as in arthritis.
Scientists from the University of Glasgow have found that a key ingredient in red wine, which has already been shown to be good for the heart and fighting cancer, can also prevent inflammation, a primary cause of several chronic illnesses.
This recent study has reported that the antioxidant found in red wine, resveratrol, blocks two key proteins responsible for inflammation. Inflammation can play a significant role in irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, and arthritis.
One of the researchers involved in this study said:
“Strong acute inflammatory diseases such as [infections like] sepsis are very difficult to treat and many die daily due to a lack of treatment. Moreover, many survivors of sepsis develop a very low quality of life due to the damage that inflammation causes to several internal organs.”
The scientists are now looking to develop new treatments based on these findings.
Resveratrol has previously been found to help lower the risk of lung cancer, protect against colon and prostate cancers, improving cholesterol and fight ageing.
